Commissioned by Itau Cultural Institute, this work draws inspiration from rituals and celebrations of Candomble (African-Brazilian religion). Its rituals involve the possession of the initiated by Orishas (gods); music and dance are essential to induce the trance that allows the god to enter the possessed body. Shot with 2 Red cameras.

Nombre: Marionettes

‘Marionettes’ developed from a series of ‘dance for film’ workshops I gave to members of the Scottish Ballet Corps. Limor Ziv’s choreography and its puppet characters Pieretta and Puaro, are based on lyrics written by Hebrew poet Leah Goldberg, famously put to music by Achinoam Nini.

The film was shot over two mornings in my local 24 hour Tesco using a plentiful supply of Coca-Cola to stop the dancers slipping on the freshly polished floors.

Este video investiga sobre las posibilidades estéticas que permiten la cámara de foto digital y los programas de edición de video e intervención fotográfica, una máquina que captura la materia real de un cuerpo que se mueve, pero que luego diluye su realidad en su digitalización y mixtura de efectos,  un cuerpo que se vuelve objeto y píxel. Este cuerpo virtual se le imprimen mapas y planos de Barcelona que hablan de un territorio que se antepone a la realidad a partir de una mirada panóptica que da proyección a sus trazos y a sus trayectos, mapas y planos de recorridos, trozos de calles, y miradas, como un fragmento de una experiencia donde hoy solo quedan restos.

This video investigates on the aesthetic possibilities that they allow to the camera of digital photo and the programs of edition of video and photographic intervention, a machine that captures the real matter of a body that moves, but  soon dilutes to its reality in its digitalization and mixture of effects, a body that becomes object and pixel. This virtual body maps and planes of Barcelona are printed to him that speak of a territory that is put in front to the reality from a panoptic view that gives to projection to its outlines and their passages, maps and planes of routes, pieces of streets, and views, as a fragment of a experience where today they are only rest.

Desde una posición critica se establece una relación entre la casa y la danza como lugares de “lo femenino”, espacios comunes predeterminados para el género. Como también intenta cuestionar las acciones o “tareas” llevadas a cabo al interior de la casa y movimientos que pueden ser reconocidos como danza a partir de la pregunta ¿cuándo esto es danza?, ¿Qué hace que esto sea danza?. Preguntas que en el caso de este video bordean los límites entre arte y vida cotidiana.

From a critical position settles down a relation between the house and the dance like places of “the feminine thing”, predetermined common spaces for the gender. As also it tries to question the actions or “tasks” carried out to the interior of the house and movements that can be recognized as it dances from the question when this is dance? , What causes that this is dance? Questions that in the case of this video border the limits between art and daily life.
